(Reinforced cement concrete)

Reinforced concrete is a composite material consisting of concrete and reinforcement (most commonly steel). The history of reinforced concrete dates back to 1849 when a French gardener named Joseph Monier unsatisfied with clay as building material for flower pots experimented with iron mesh. Although monier was not the first one to experiment with reinforced concrete but he promoted it extensively and is today regarded as the principal inventors of R.C.C. In 1875, the first iron-reinforced concrete bridge ever built was constructed at the Castle of Chazelet, Monier was the designer.

Today concrete is the most widely used construction material. Concrete comes in many forms among Plain and Reinforced concrete are the most common. Plain Concrete is strong in compression and inherently weak in tension. This weakness in concrete can be overcome by adding steel reinforcement in such a way that the good properties of both materials can be used. Although still more than 40% of buildings in Nepal are made from masonry, most of the buildings today in urban areas of Nepal are constructed using reinforced concrete.
